The two weathers that can actually kill you

  • Acid Rain, in the rain seasons: your health drains unless you are wearing the Welder's Mask. Outdoor crops get watered but lose health, and reaching zero health kills the plant—plastic mulch is what prevents it. Every powered device outdoors stops working, and farm buildings lose durability at varying rates.
  • Scorching Sun, in the dry seasons: uncovered outdoor crops have their water forced to zero and watering them does nothing at all, so health drains until they die. Water in outdoor barrels evaporates and the Simple Well cannot be used.
  • Fuel generators—Simple, Fuel and Upgraded Fuel—are unusable in acid rain and unaffected otherwise. Wind and Solar generators have to be outdoors and their output moves with the weather, which is a different problem from being switched off.
  • A player guide adds three failures worth planning around: automatic sprinklers do not work during acid rain, drone stations do not function while exposed to it, and farm lights stop too.

Thunderstorms are a separate problem with a cheap fix

Each lightning strike rolls an event type first: 30% a building, 70% an outdoor device. That roll happens independently of whether such a thing exists, so having no outdoor devices does not push the building chance to 100%—it just means most strikes hit nothing. A strike on a building costs durability; a strike on a planter damages the crop inside it; a strike on any other non-rod device does nothing. A separate simultaneous roll can hit an outdoor animal and cost it mood.

A Lightning Rod intercepts all of it. Protection covers a 15 by 15 area and a single overlapping tile is enough to count as protected, so one well-placed rod covers a normal farm layout. It costs 1 Electric WireWireA crafted material; farm devices share a power pool rather than manual cable drawing. and 3 Copper IngotCopper IngotRefined copper used by machines, tools, and repair recipes. behind a 2 Tech Research node—cheap enough that there is no reason to be hit twice.

Three weather regions, not one

Weather is rolled separately for three areas: the town and its surroundings including the suburbs, Ridge Valley and River Valley; the Wetlands; and the Old City Ruins. They do not share a forecast.

The Wetlands is permanently Heavy Rain and the Old City Ruins permanently Harsh Dry, which constrains what you can fish and farm in each. Both can still roll apocalypse weather even after the town is fully restored—the Wetlands never rolls Scorching Sun and the Old City never rolls Acid Rain. That is why species tied to apocalypse weather, such as the Fluorescent Eel, stay farmable long after the town has stopped seeing storms.

How restorations clear the town calendar

In town, apocalypse weather only lands on fixed annual calendar dates and covers all 24 hours of that day; the chance of natural weather turning into apocalypse weather in town is zero. Before you complete any environmental restoration, mild seasons get their apocalypse weather every Sunday and extreme seasons get it Friday through Sunday.

Restorations two through five alternate—mild, extreme, mild, extreme. Mild seasons are fully clean after four restorations, and all fixed apocalypse weather in town is gone after seven. Until then, the calendar is predictable, so plan harvests around the known dates rather than reacting to a forecast.
