What a gene is, and the three-trait ceiling

A gene in Doloc Town belongs to a seed, not to a plant already in the ground. Traits carry forward into the crop the seed grows, and back into seed only through the Seed Compressor or through a trait that drops seed on its own. The ceiling is three distinct traits on one item, and the Gene Synthesizer states it outright—nothing else in the chain raises it.

Twenty-two traits exist. Fifteen sit in the activation pool from the start. Six more—Parasite, Unbridled Growth, Even Rain, Nightbloom, Aerial Roots and Highly Oxygenated—join it only after the Biomass Directory terraforming function is completed at the Terraformer. The twenty-second, Seedless, is never rolled at all: it is what the game stamps on produce grown from a cloned seed.

Every gene machine is flagged for acid-rain faults on the Chinese wiki, so the whole lab belongs indoors or under cover. A machine that faults mid-cycle is a wasted day you will not notice until you open the panel.

The chamber rule that costs people their best seed

The Gene Activation Chamber takes a flat 24 hours and expresses exactly one trait. Before it does, it deletes every trait the seed already carried. A seed you spent a week building up is gone to a single careless insert, so keep a stock of plain seeds for rolling and never feed the chamber something you cannot replace.

Three smaller rules follow from how it ticks. Its nine slots each run an independent timer, so nine rolls cost you one day rather than nine. Pulling a seed out mid-cycle zeroes that slot with no partial credit. And once a slot has expressed a trait, its progress pauses until you open the panel—which means the chamber waits for you, but also that a result you leave sitting will be overwritten by the next cycle once you have opened the panel and walked away.

The practical routine is therefore daily: open the chamber, take anything you wanted out immediately, and only then let the remaining slots roll again. Players who check every few days are the ones who report losing a trait they had already rolled.

Cloned seeds are a dead end, on purpose

The Gene Replicator consumes one non-cloned seed or capsule as a template and stamps its trait set onto up to 20 plain seeds of the matching crop in 12 hours. Any seed that receives a trait beyond its own default becomes a clone, and clones are walled off: they cannot enter any gene machine, as material or as target, and their harvested produce is force-tagged Seedless and cannot be compressed back into seed.

So the replicator is for planting stock, never for breeding stock. Whatever combination you care about, keep at least one non-cloned seed or one capsule of it in storage, or the line ends the moment you plant your last copy.

The same machine has a second mode worth knowing: feed it a template with no traits, or with only the seed's own default trait, and it switches to clearing instead of copying—stripping the traits off everything in its main slots in about 5 minutes. That is the fastest way to reset a batch of ruined seeds.

Reaching three traits

The Gene Synthesizer takes two non-cloned seeds or capsules, destroys both, and returns one item. It first adds up the trait entries on both parents without removing duplicates, and that raw total picks the row of the probability table below. Then it de-duplicates the pool and draws that many distinct traits.

That two-step order is where the trick lives. Two parents holding A and B against A and C give four combined entries, which is a 50% chance of a three-trait result; because de-duplication leaves exactly three distinct traits, every hit is the A, B, C set you were aiming for. Two two-trait parents sharing nothing also give four entries and the same 50%, but a hit draws three out of four traits, so one of them will be an impurity you did not want.

When de-duplication leaves fewer traits than the row can produce, the surplus probability rolls down instead of being wasted. Parents of A plus B and A alone total three entries, but with only two distinct traits available the 30% three-trait share moves onto the two-trait line, giving 20% for one trait and 80% for two.

Two warnings. The machine randomly picks one of the two inputs as the item the result comes out on, so with parents of different crops you do not control which crop you end up with. And because it consumes both parents and never reaches 100%, it is a tool for creating a combination, not for mass-producing one—copying is the replicator's job.

Keeping a combination once you have it

The Gene Extractor turns one non-cloned gene-bearing seed into a capsule in 4 hours, queueing up to 20. A single-trait seed yields a named single capsule; a multi-trait seed yields a Composite Gene Capsule that preserves the whole set. Capsules are the safe way to store a combination, because they can be used as replicator templates or synthesizer parents without risking the seed itself.

The Seed Compressor is the other direction: a gene-bearing crop back into its own seed in 2 hours. The seed's natural trait and Hope always survive; everything else is drawn at random by the table below, and completing the Biomass Directory improves the odds of keeping two or three.

Hope deserves its reputation. It drops a copy of the seed after the final harvest, or when a withered crop is cleared, and that seed inherits every trait the plant carried. It also survives compression automatically. A line carrying Hope keeps itself alive with no machine at all, which is why it is worth rolling for on any combination you plan to keep. Windborne behaves the same way for the seeds it scatters into nearby empty basins.

Where the sources disagree

Two independent references cover this system and they agree on the numbers that matter—the synthesizer table and the per-seed activation odds match to the decimal—but three points do not line up, and it is worth saying so rather than picking one.

Highly Oxygenated's tick rate is unsettled. The Chinese wiki records one energy every 3 real seconds; Neoseeker records one every 15 in-game minutes. The game's own clock runs 5 in-game minutes to 4 real seconds, which makes 15 in-game minutes about 12 real seconds, so neither figure reconciles with the other. The effect is confirmed; the rate is not.

The clone trait has two English names. Neoseeker's trait list calls it Seedless and its own machines page calls it Infertility. They are the same trait.

The Gene Synthesizer's 10 minutes and 40 power, and the Seed Compressor's 2 hours and 480 power, carry a version 0.95.14 stamp on the Chinese wiki—before 1.0 shipped. The structure has held up; treat those two timings as the figures most likely to have moved.

Seed Compressor: how many traits survive

The natural trait and Hope are kept first and do not consume a roll. The Biomass Directory terraforming function shifts the distribution upward.
